Mounting a tire on a beadlock wheel is different from mounting one on a standard wheel. On a conventional wheel, air pressure holds the tire bead against the rim. On a true beadlock wheel, the outer bead is physically clamped between the wheel and a bolt-on ring—usually secured by 16 to 24 bolts. Every bolt must be tightened to the correct torque, in the correct sequence, and usually in several passes.
Get it right, and your tire stays planted at single-digit pressures in rocks, sand, mud, and on the trail. Get it wrong, and you may end up chasing a slow leak—or losing a ring bolt while riding.
The good news is that most UTV owners can complete this job at home with basic hand tools, a proper torque wrench, and some patience. This guide walks through the process using published manufacturer instructions and brings the available torque specifications together in one place.
One rule takes priority over everything else in this guide: the instructions included with your wheel always win. Torque specifications can vary by manufacturer, bolt size, and even by wheel model within the same brand.
The Short Version
Installation sequence: Hand-start every bolt, tighten them in a star or cross pattern over at least three graduated passes, and finish with a torque wrench. Never use an impact gun.
Typical final torque: Most UTV beadlock-ring bolts are torqued between 12 and 24 ft-lbs, depending on the manufacturer and bolt size. That is much lower than lug-nut torque and is where many first-time installers go wrong.
Thread preparation: Many manufacturers—including Method, System 3, Tusk, STI, SuperATV, and Valor—recommend anti-seize or a small amount of oil on the beadlock-bolt threads. If the manufacturer publishes both dry and lubricated torque values, use the value that matches how the threads were prepared.
Re-torque schedule: A common schedule is after the first 50 miles and then every 200 miles. Method recommends checking after 5 to 10 miles and then every 250 miles.

What Does a Beadlock Wheel Actually Do?
A standard UTV wheel has a molded bead seat. Air pressure pushes the tire bead outward against that seat, and friction helps hold it in place. When tire pressure is dropped too low—which is often desirable for added traction in sand or over rocks—that holding force decreases. The tire can slip on the rim or “burp” off the bead, leaving you with a flat tire on the trail.
A true beadlock wheel solves this mechanically. The outer edge of the wheel uses a separate ring that bolts over the tire’s outer bead, physically clamping the bead between the ring and the wheel. Because the clamp does not depend entirely on air pressure, the tire can be run at lower pressures with far less risk of the outer bead coming off the wheel. That is why beadlock wheels are popular in rock crawling, desert racing, sand riding, mud, trail riding, and other conditions where low tire pressure improves traction.
The tradeoff is installation and maintenance. A ring and several bolts are now helping perform a job that air pressure handled on its own, so the assembly must be installed correctly:
- Uneven torque can clamp the bead crooked and cause leaks.
- Excessive torque can stretch or break bolts.
- Insufficient torque can allow the ring to loosen.
- Skipping the re-torque can cause problems as the tire bead settles.
The process is not especially difficult, but the correct sequence, tool, and torque specification matter.

Do Beadlock Wheels Require Special Tires?
For most UTV applications, no. A standard UTV or SXS tire can usually be mounted on a beadlock wheel because only the outer bead is clamped. The inner bead still seats against the wheel conventionally.

Keep in mind that most true beadlock wheels clamp only the outer bead. The inner bead still depends on air pressure to remain seated, so a single beadlock wheel is not fully “double locked” when tire pressure is extremely low. Double-beadlock wheels exist but are uncommon in typical UTV applications. For most recreational riders, a single outer beadlock provides the protection they need.
Tools and Supplies You Will Need
An appropriate torque wrench
Use a torque wrench that reads accurately within approximately 10 to 40 ft-lbs. A large 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench designed primarily for lug nuts may not be accurate enough at a 15 ft-lb setting. A quality 3/8-inch-drive click-style torque wrench is usually a better choice.
The correct socket
Use the socket size required by your beadlock hardware. A 1/2-inch hex is common with some 5/16-inch bolts, but hardware varies by manufacturer and wheel model.
Anti-seize or light oil
Use anti-seize or oil only when recommended by the wheel manufacturer. Method specifies products such as Permatex 80078, Loctite LB 8150, or an equivalent anti-seize compound.
Tire-mounting lubricant
Use a proper tire-mounting lubricant or a mild soap-and-water solution where permitted.
Valve-stem tools
You will need a valve stem and a valve-core tool.
Air source and accurate pressure gauge
Use an air source that allows you to inflate the tire gradually and monitor pressure accurately.
Optional tools
Tire spoons and a dead-blow mallet can help with tight-fitting beads. An upside-down 5-gallon bucket also works well as a simple wheel stand.
Before You Begin
Work on a clean, level surface. Support the wheel so it cannot rock or tip while you tighten the beadlock ring. Keep all beadlock hardware organized, and do not mix bolts from different wheel brands, models, or hardware kits.
Read the instruction sheet included with the wheel before beginning—that document is the final authority for your specific wheel. You should also plan how you will inflate the tire. Seating a tire bead involves stored air pressure, so position yourself where you can remain out of the tire’s direct path during inflation.
Step-by-Step Beadlock Tire Installation

1. Install the valve stem
Install the valve stem before mounting the tire. Raceline places this step at the beginning of its instructions for good reason—installing the valve stem after the tire is in position is unnecessarily difficult.
2. Lubricate only the non-beadlock side
Apply mounting lubricant to the inner bead—the side that will seat conventionally inside the wheel. Keep lubricant off the beadlock side unless your wheel manufacturer specifically instructs otherwise. STI directs installers to use mounting lubricant only on the tire and wheel side opposite the beadlock. The outer bead and clamping surface should remain clean and dry so the ring can grip the tire properly.
3. Mount the inner bead over the wheel
Work the inner, non-beadlock bead over the outer lip of the wheel. Push the tire down until the outer bead rests flat against the beadlock flange. Most UTV tire-and-wheel combinations can be mounted on the floor without a tire machine. Tire spoons and a dead-blow mallet may help if the tire is tight.

4. Position the ring and hand-start every bolt
Center the tire’s outer bead on the wheel’s clamping surface and place the beadlock ring over it. Start every beadlock bolt by hand and turn each one at least a few threads before using a ratchet or wrench—this helps prevent cross-threading. Tusk, SuperATV, and Valor specifically instruct installers to hand-start the bolts.
Some wheels include alignment or starter bolts. System 3, for example, includes four silver starter bolts on certain models. Use them as directed to position the ring, and replace them with the standard bolts when instructed.
5. Prepare the threads according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Many manufacturers recommend anti-seize or a small amount of oil on the bolt threads. Follow the instructions for your wheel exactly. Thread lubricant changes the amount of clamping force created at a given torque setting: Method publishes separate dry and lubricated torque values, with the lubricated values being lower. Applying anti-seize and then using a dry-thread torque specification can create excessive clamping force even though the torque wrench is set to the published number. This is one of the most important reasons to follow the instructions included with your wheel rather than relying on a general chart alone.
6. Tighten the bolts in a star pattern and in stages
Do not tighten the ring completely one bolt at a time—doing so can pull the ring down unevenly and pinch the tire bead. Use a star or cross pattern and tighten the bolts in graduated passes so the ring seats evenly. Examples from manufacturer instructions:

- Draw the tire and ring together using the recommended circular sequence, then complete three full star-pattern passes at final torque

7. Inspect the ring gap
Look around the entire circumference of the wheel. The gap between the beadlock ring and the wheel face should be consistent. An uneven gap may indicate that the bead is pinched or that the ring was pulled down crooked. Do not try to correct a visibly uneven ring by simply tightening the low side further—loosen the bolts, reposition the bead and ring, and repeat the staged tightening process.
8. Seat the inner bead without exceeding the pressure limit
Inflate the tire gradually until the inner bead seats against the wheel. You may hear an audible pop when the bead moves into position. The bead may seat around 20 to 25 psi, but the required pressure varies by tire and wheel combination.
Do not treat any maximum pressure as a target. Published limits vary:
- Method limits seating pressure to 50 psi.
- Valor says never to exceed 25 psi.
- System 3, STI, and Tusk refer installers to the maximum pressure molded into the tire or provided by the tire manufacturer.
Follow the lowest applicable limit for your tire-and-wheel combination, and stand to the side of the tire—outside its direct trajectory—while inflating.

9. Check for leaks and set the riding pressure
Spray soapy water around the beadlock ring, outer bead, inner bead, and valve stem, and watch for growing bubbles that indicate a leak. Once the assembly passes the leak check, adjust the tire to your normal riding pressure. Record the vehicle’s mileage or note the first ride so you know when the initial re-torque is due.

Specifications can vary by wheel model, hardware size, and hardware type, and the instructions included with your wheel take priority over this chart. Where a manufacturer does not publish a specification in accessible written documentation, it is identified rather than estimated.

A Note About Factory Beadlock Wheels
Some factory-installed beadlock wheels use torque specifications considerably higher than common aftermarket-wheel specifications. Certain Kawasaki KRX applications are frequently cited as an example. If the wheels came installed on the UTV from the factory, do not assume that an aftermarket torque value applies—use the specification in the vehicle’s owner’s manual or service manual.
Beadlock Installation Mistakes to Avoid
Do not use an impact gun
Method states not to use an impact driver. System 3 says impact wrenches are not recommended at any stage because they can over-tighten or under-tighten the hardware. Treat this as a general rule: use hand tools to bring the bolts down and a torque wrench for the final passes. An impact tool can damage the ring, crack or pinch the tire bead, or break a bolt before you have time to react.
Never loosen the ring while the tire is inflated
Completely deflate the tire before loosening any beadlock bolts. Method explicitly warns never to loosen beadlock clamp bolts while there is air pressure in the tire. The ring is retaining stored pressure and can become dangerous if the hardware is removed while the tire is inflated.
Do not over-tighten the bolts
More torque does not create a better seal. Excessive torque can damage the ring, distort the tire bead, stretch the hardware, or break a bolt. KMC specifically warns that over-tightening can cause bolt failure and serious injury.
Do not substitute hardware
Use the hardware supplied or approved by the wheel manufacturer. Method requires at least Grade 8 hardware and recommends its approved hardware kits. A general-purpose hardware-store bolt may not have the correct strength, dimensions, coating, or thread engagement for the application.
Do not skip the re-torque
The tire bead compresses and settles during the first rides. As this happens, some bolts may lose part of their initial clamping load. A complete re-torque takes only a few minutes and is part of normal beadlock-wheel ownership.
Beadlock Maintenance and Re-Torque Schedule
The initial re-torque is the most important. As the tire bead settles beneath the ring, the ring may pull inward slightly, which can reduce the effective torque on the bolts. For most manufacturers that publish a schedule:
- Re-torque after the first 50 miles.
- Re-torque again every 200 miles.
Method recommends a first check after 5 to 10 miles and additional checks every 250 miles. Tusk recommends checking every 50 miles during the first 200 miles. Always use the same star pattern and the same torque specification used during installation. Because a loose beadlock bolt can contribute to pressure loss, inspect the ring visually and check tire pressure before each ride.
Is It a True Beadlock Wheel?
Some wheels have the appearance of a beadlock but do not physically clamp the tire bead. Method’s Bead Grip design is one well-known example—it uses specially shaped and grooved bead seats to improve tire retention rather than a removable clamping ring.
If your wheel uses a decorative ring or a bead-retention design instead of a true beadlock, there may be no beadlock-ring hardware to torque, and standard tire-mounting procedures generally apply. Do beadlock wheels need to be balanced?
It depends on how and where you ride. Many UTV owners running low speeds on trails, sand, and rocks run beadlock wheels without balancing, while riders who spend time at higher speeds often prefer to have them balanced for comfort and reduced vibration. Because a beadlock ring adds rotating weight and the assembly can only be balanced as a unit, follow your wheel manufacturer’s guidance and have a shop balance them if you notice vibration at speed.
Do beadlock wheels require special tires?
Generally, no. Most standard UTV and SXS tires can be mounted on beadlock wheels because the ring clamps only the outer bead while the inner bead seats conventionally.
