Where is the fuel tank on a Maverick X3?
The tank sits at the front of the machine, between the front footwells and the firewall, tucked underneath the plastic dash and the passenger-side glove box assembly. It is not behind the seats, which is where a lot of people go looking for it first.
To reach the top of the tank, the fuel pump, or the sending unit, you need to remove the passenger-side glove box and the plastic paneling directly above it.
The filler neck and gas cap sit on the exterior hood cowl area near the front hood and dash perimeter, so you refuel from outside the machine. Exact placement varies slightly depending on the specific model layout.
That front-mounted position is also why a drop-in replacement tank works the way it does — a direct-fit tank occupies the same cavity, so nothing has to be cut, moved, or fabricated.
How far can you extend it?
There are three ways to add range to an X3, and they stack differently.
Replace the stock tank. A drop-in extended tank swaps into the OEM location with no cutting or fabrication. The RPM 15.4-gallon tank is the direct-fit option: +4.9 gallons over stock, a 47% increase, with no auxiliary plumbing to manage. This is the cleanest solution if you want more range without changing how the car is packaged.
Add an auxiliary tank. Auxiliary tanks mount alongside the stock tank and transfer fuel into it. A 4.5-gallon single-side kit takes you to 15 gallons total; running both driver and passenger sides gives you 9 extra gallons for 19.5 gallons total. This is the dunes-and-Baja answer, where the goal is maximum time between fuel stops.
Carry it. A 5-gallon spill-proof jug in the bed is the zero-install option and the standard backup for group rides.
