Is this one axle or a pair?

One axle, sold each. Order quantity two if you are replacing both sides.

Why do stock axles break?

Axles fail where the shaft and CV joint run out of articulation and plunge travel under load. Demon uses larger CV joints and shafts and a dual heat treated chromoly shaft to raise that limit.

What are TPEE boots?

Thermoplastic polyester elastomer. Demon uses them because they are stiffer and more fatigue, puncture and temperature resistant than a standard OEM boot — boots are where many axle failures start.

Is there a stronger option?

Yes. Demon's X-Treme line runs 4340 chromoly through every component, and the Race Spec version steps the shaft up to a 300M aircraft-grade alloy.
