A snapped rear axle on a 64-inch Can-Am Maverick X3 ends the day where it happens. The Demon Heavy Duty rear axle is a direct-fit replacement for the rear left or rear right position on 64-inch X3 and X3 Max machines from 2017 through 2024, built around larger CV joints, a dual heat treated chromoly shaft and a 4340 chromoly steel inner CV cage so the driveline survives sand, whoops and hard desert miles.

Demon builds this axle with a double plunge design that lets the shaft slide on the bar splines, giving 1.5 inches of travel and 40 degrees of articulation at the inboard joint. The outboard joint travels 0.5 inches and swings from 45 to 47 degrees depending on the model. Molybdenum grease keeps friction and heat down inside the joint.

Key Features

  • Dual heat treated high strength chromoly steel shaft
  • Inner CV cage upgraded to 4340 chromoly steel
  • Larger CV joints and shafts than the standard Demon line
  • Double plunge design — 1.5 inches of plunge travel and 40 degrees of articulation on the inboard joint
  • Outboard joint travels 0.5 inches and swings 45 to 47 degrees depending on the model
  • TPEE (thermoplastic polyester elastomer) boots — stiffer, and more fatigue, puncture and temperature resistant than a standard OEM boot
  • Molybdenum grease for low friction and smooth motion
  • Backed by a 1 year warranty

Built To Solve: Broken Rear Axles On A 64-Inch Can-Am Maverick X3

  • Stock rear axles that let go under power in deep sand or on dune faces
  • Torn OEM boots that sling grease, pack the joint with sand and destroy the CV
  • Clicking or binding at full droop when the suspension outruns the axle's articulation
  • Repeat axle replacement on a machine running more power or taller tires
  • Heat build-up in the CV joint on long, fast desert runs

Best For: 64-Inch X3 And X3 Max Owners Riding Trail, Desert And Dunes

  • Trail and tight-terrain riders on the narrower 64-inch chassis
  • X3 Max owners carrying passengers and the extra weight that comes with them
  • Dune and desert riders loading the rear driveline hard off the throttle stop
  • Owners carrying a spare axle for weekend trips and remote rides
  • Riders who want an upgrade over stock without race-spec pricing — for a dedicated race car, look at Demon's X-Treme Heavy Duty line instead

Fitment

Demon lists this rear axle for 2017–2024 Can-Am Maverick X3 and Maverick X3 Max in 64-inch width, rear left or rear right, on both No Smart-Lok and With Smart-Lok machines.

This is the 64-inch axle. Owners of 72-inch-wide X3 machines need Demon part PAXL-3040HD. Machine width, not seat count or trim name, decides which rear axle fits — confirm your width before ordering. Fitment is not guaranteed on applications outside the range listed above.

FAQ

Will this axle fit my 72-inch Maverick X3?

No. This is the 64-inch-wide rear axle. If your X3 is a 72-inch machine you need Demon part PAXL-3040HD instead. Width is the most common mistake on X3 axle orders, so confirm your machine's width before ordering.

Does it fit the 4-seat X3 Max?

Yes. Demon lists this axle for both the Maverick X3 and the X3 Max in 64-inch width. Seat count does not change the rear axle; machine width does.

Does it work with Smart-Lok and non-Smart-Lok machines?

Yes. Demon lists this axle for both No Smart-Lok and With Smart-Lok 64-inch applications, so the front differential type does not change which rear axle you need.

Is this one axle or a pair?

One axle. It is sold each and fits either the rear left or the rear right position, so order quantity two if you are replacing both sides.

Why do stock X3 rear axles break?

Rear axles fail where the shaft and CV joint run out of articulation and plunge travel under load. Demon addresses this with a double plunge design giving 1.5 inches of travel and 40 degrees of articulation on the inboard joint, plus larger CV joints and shafts.

What makes the Demon Heavy Duty stronger than the OEM shaft?

A dual heat treated high strength chromoly steel shaft with the inner CV cage upgraded to 4340 chromoly steel, larger CV joints, and TPEE boots that are stiffer and more puncture, fatigue and temperature resistant than a standard OEM boot.

Why Demon

Demon Powersports developed this axle line through years of research and development to reach a price point that does not burn a hole in your pocket while still holding to their quality standards. The heavy duty range is bigger, beefier and stronger than the standard shaft, and it is the tier most X3 owners land on after their first OEM axle failure.

Complete Your 64-Inch Maverick X3 Rear Driveline Rebuild

If you are replacing a rear axle on a 64-inch Maverick X3 or X3 Max, order quantity two to do both sides at once and keep the old side as a trail spare. Confirm your machine is 64 inch wide before ordering — the 72-inch X3 uses a different part number. While the rear end is apart, check the carrier bearing and rear limit straps: a worn carrier bearing or a missing limit strap lets the suspension outrun the axle's articulation and is a common reason a replacement axle fails as fast as the original.
