Polaris did not give the XPEDITION more horsepower for 2027. That is the point. The enclosed-cab adventure machine carries over its 114-horsepower ProStar 1000 unchanged and instead gets an entirely new transmission: NUMATIX Controlled CVT, a pneumatically controlled system Polaris developed in-house and calls an industry first. It is joined by three selectable drive modes, revised shifting and a standard onboard air system.
The XPEDITION continues in XP and ADV versions, in two-seat and five-seat layouts. The ADV keeps its fully enclosed cab and covered cargo area; the XP pairs an enclosed passenger compartment with an open dumping cargo box. Dealer shipments began in August 2026.

NUMATIX Controlled CVT is the headline upgrade
A conventional CVT is a mechanical device. Its behavior is set at the factory by the weights, springs and helix angles installed in the clutches, and it responds the same way whether you are crawling over rocks, towing a trailer or cruising a graded road. Changing that behavior means changing parts.
NUMATIX replaces that fixed calibration with active control. A dedicated transmission control module works with an integrated air system to manage clutch pressure in real time, and Polaris says it monitors rider inputs, terrain and vehicle behavior up to 200 times per second. Instead of one compromise calibration, the CVT gets a calibration appropriate to what the machine is doing at that moment.
Polaris offers three modes, described in its own words:
- Comfort — "prioritizes smooth engagement and reduced noise"
- Standard — "balances responsiveness and refinement for a connected, controlled feel"
- Sport — "sharpens response and increases engine speed when conditions call for more immediate performance"
Quieter cruising for long days
Constant engine and CVT drone is the thing that wears people out on a long day in a side-by-side, and it is the problem NUMATIX is aimed squarely at.

Steady-speed travel on graded road is exactly where the old CVT droned. It is the scenario NUMATIX was built for.
Polaris states the cabin is up to 40% quieter than with a conventional CVT. Launch coverage puts more precise numbers on it: roughly 45% lower engine RPM at a steady 30 mph — down to around 2,700 rpm — and a reduction of about 9 decibels in perceived cabin noise at 35 mph.
Nine decibels is not a rounding error. A drop of roughly 10 dB is generally perceived as cutting loudness in half. In an enclosed cab with heat and air conditioning, on a machine built for multi-hour backcountry travel with families aboard, that changes the character of the vehicle more than a horsepower bump would.
More control at low speeds
The XPEDITION's job is different from a sport side-by-side's. It carries people and gear through changing terrain rather than chasing acceleration numbers, and low-speed manners matter more than peak output.
Active pneumatic control helps there. The system can raise clamping force when the machine is working hard — climbing, towing, loaded down — and soften drivetrain response in Comfort mode during ordinary trail travel. Sport mode goes the other way, holding higher engine speed for quicker response.
It is not purely a comfort play, either. Launch coverage reports the 2027 machine is roughly one second quicker to 50 mph than the previous model, on identical horsepower. That gain comes from how the transmission manages the engine, not from the engine itself.
114 horsepower, unchanged — on purpose
Some early coverage framed the 2027 engine as an upgrade. It is worth being precise: the 2026 XPEDITION already made 114 horsepower from a 999cc ProStar 1000, and the 2027 makes the same 114 horsepower from a 999cc ProStar 1000 Gen 2. Output is flat.
That is a deliberate choice, and it is the most interesting thing about this model year. Polaris spent its engineering budget on how the power is delivered rather than on how much of it there is. For a machine whose competition is measured in comfort over eight hours rather than seconds to 60, that is arguably the right call — and it is a genuinely unusual one in a segment where the marketing usually leads with a bigger number.
Integrated onboard air
NUMATIX needs compressed air to function, and Polaris turned that requirement into a feature. The 2027 XPEDITION includes a built-in compressed air system as standard, with an auxiliary port for on-demand use.
That means airing tires down for sand or rock and back up for the drive home without carrying a separate compressor, plus blowing dust out of filters and radiators at camp and running air-powered accessories. Polaris offers a 25-foot air hose kit and a four-gallon pressurized water tank as accessories.
It is a practical addition rather than a headline feature, which suits the platform.
What has not changed

The XP in profile: enclosed passenger compartment, open dumping box, spare on the bed. Visually, 2027 is a carryover.
The XPEDITION's concept carries over intact. The enclosed NorthStar cab with heat and air conditioning, modular cargo solutions and two- or five-seat layouts all continue. So does the hardware underneath: up to 15 inches of travel on FOX 2.0 Podium shocks, 14 inches of ground clearance, a 4,500-pound winch, 2,000-pound towing capacity and a 600-pound cargo box. RIDE COMMAND navigation and JBL Trail Pro audio remain.
Owners of 2025 and 2026 machines should not expect a different-looking vehicle. Everything meaningful for 2027 is in the drivetrain, the shifting, the noise floor and the air system.

Is the 2027 XPEDITION worth the upgrade?
It depends entirely on what bothers you about the machine you have.
If you want more power, there is nothing here. Output is identical to 2026 and the chassis is unchanged. A 2025 or 2026 owner looking for straight-line speed has no reason to trade.
If what wears on you is drone on the long connector roads, jerky low-speed engagement in technical terrain, or hauling a compressor to air down at the trailhead, then 2027 addresses all three directly. A cabin that is measurably half as loud at cruising speed is the kind of change you notice on hour six, not in the first ten minutes.
The honest caveat: NUMATIX is a first-year system, and it adds a control module, an air circuit and pneumatic actuation to a driveline that previously had none of those things. More capability means more to maintain. Buyers who prize mechanical simplicity above all may want to watch how the first season goes.
